An internal link should do more than connect related keywords. Labeling its role during editing makes the reader path intentional and exposes links that merely decorate the page.
Choose a role
Use five practical labels: definition, procedure, evidence, comparison, or next step. A link can have one primary role in its sentence. If the editor cannot name that role, the destination may not belong there.
Write anchors for people
The linked words should describe what the destination contributes. Avoid “read more” and avoid forcing exact-match wording into an unnatural sentence. Confirm that the destination still fulfills the anchor’s promise.
Review the route as a set
Too many definition links may signal that the article assumes missing context. Too many next-step links may turn education into a corridor of calls to action. Preserve the main article’s ability to stand on its own.
The internal link next-step map helps arrange destinations around a decision. Role labels provide the claim-level check for each individual link.
Verify every selected route returns successfully and remains relevant before publication. A semantically perfect anchor cannot rescue a broken or misleading destination.
